Hunt for the truth begins—Aquino

LIKE ANY ACCUSED Janet Lim-Napoles, alleged brains of the P10-billion pork barrel scam whose surrender to President Aquino in Malacaang raised eyebrows, had her mug shots taken in Camp Crame. She is accused of serious illegal detention of whistle-blower Benhur Luy, her former employee and relative. MARIANNE BERMUDEZ
President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday night said the hunt for the truth would now begin following the surrender of Janet Lim-Napoles.
She has been taken into custody by the proper authorities, after which she will undergo due process and face the charges filed against her. In place of a manhunt, the real hunt can now resume: The hunt for the truth, which I have pledged to our people, will go whereverand to whomeverthe evidence will lead, Mr. Aquino said at a dinner hosted by the INQUIRER for visiting officials of Asia News Network.
The President described Wednesday, when Napoles surrendered to him in Malacaang, as rather eventful.
The Inquirer (reporters), together with their counterparts from other media organizations in the country, had to scramble for one of the biggest headlines of the year, he said.
Shortly before 10 in the evening, Janet Lim-Napoles, a fugitive wanted for illegal detention and a central figure in a graft and corruption scandal, surrendered to me, Mr. Aquino said.
He said reports on the surrender of Napoles to the government was an example of the interplay between two institutionsthe government and the mediaas the media ask us questions about what took place, and we reply, with both sectors accountable to one audience constantly judging our all move: The people.
Mr. Aquino went on: This interaction can be complicated and noisy. I can only hope and expect the people we serve know that we are both trying, in our own ways, to come at the similar place: The truth.
In a freewheeling interview with Inquirer editors and reporters following his speech, Mr. Aquino denied extending special treatment to Napoles by personally escorting her to Camp Crame.
Its to emphasize to everybody (that) its important for her to stay alive, the President said.
Asked why Napoles was not handcuffed before she was taken to Camp Crame, Mr. Aquino cited health reasonsNapoles blood pressure was shooting up.
He begged off from commenting on the possibility of Napoles turning state witness, saying he was yet waiting for the recommendations of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.
The matter would also depend on whether Napoles was the least guilty and the value of her testimony in relation to the participation of lawmakers in the pork barrel scam, Mr. Aquino said.
The President told the Inquirer cases against Napoles, president of JLN Group of Companies, would be filed in two to three weeks. One of the charges is plunder, penalized by life imprisonment, officials earlier said.
Napoles, 49, the alleged mastermind of the plot to channel  to fake agencies the allocations of five senators and 23 congressmen from their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), was whisked to the Palace for a 10-minute meeting with President Aquino after her surrender upon  Wednesday night at Heritage Park, a posh cemetery in Taguig City. Napoles mother is buried at Heritage.
He wants the truth to arrive out and now were closer to the truth, hopefully, with her coming out, said presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, who arranged the surrender to Mr. Aquino of Napoles with her lawyer, Lorna Kapunan. Lacierda said he and Kapunan had worked together for three years in the Robocop law office led by the late Sen. Raul Roco.
State witness least guilty
De Lima told reporters that although Napoles appeared to be the most guilty in the alleged racket disclosed to the National Bureau of Investigation by at least 10 whistle-blowers composed of her former employees, the Department of Justice (DOJ) was not discounting the possibility that the JLN head would be used as state witness.
Under the law, she said, the state witness should be the least guilty among participants in a crime. If there is sufficient evidence to pin down the other accused, that means you dont need the accused to be discharged as a state witness, she said.
De Lima maintained that for now the principal sources of the evidence in the P10-billion pork barrel scam were the accounts made by the whistle-blowers led by Benhur Luy and Merlina Suas that pointed to Napoles as the most guilty in the scam.
She is the one being pinpointed by the whistle-blowers, she was the one giving them instructions to create these bogus nongovernment organizations to be conduits of the pork barrel funds, she said.
The whistle-blowers said that up to 70 percent of the funds secured from PDAF went to lawmakers who gave to Napoles access to their pork allocations.
If the DOJ eventually files a plunder case, De Lima said Napoles would be considered the principal by direct participation  a coconspirator.
Napoles inconsistent
Still, De Lima said it would also be best to look whether Napoles was willing to say all.
It would depend what she would say or what she knows. Its also different if she knows a lot but she might not tell what all these are, she said.
De Lima said Napoles surrender had only strengthened her belief in the testimonies of the whistle-blowers. She said statements from the Napoles camp revealed inconsistencies.
She said Napoles explanation that she surrendered because she feared for her life only showed that the whistle-blowers were telling the truth.
Before, she was denying anything. She denied she had NGOs, that she has connections, linkages to senators and lawmakers, and that her source of wealth is her alleged coal business. She has become inconsistent, De Lima said.
Whistle-blowers credible
De Lima said the NBI had not monitored any threat against Napoles. But in the realm of possibility, its possible. If its true that there are other powerful people involved, its possible that the threat would arrive from them, she said.
In the Palace briefing, Lacierda said that since revelations of the pork barrel scam broke out everybody has been crying blood. He said this was evident in the Million People March at Manilas Rizal Park upon Monday. Everybody was so outraged.
One of the things that theyve been crying blood for the longest time is Janet Napoles. Now we have secured her and thats the important thing. We can now move forward, the presidential spokesperson said.
Lacierda shrugged off insinuations that Napoles was now untouchable after she surrendered to the Chief Executive himself. He also dismissed suggestions that Napoles would be used as ammunition against the political enemies of the administration.
Im not aware of what she knows. We didnt even discuss that. So what is undeniable is that she is wanted and she is a key to finding out the truth and thats the most important thing, Lacierda said. With reports from Norman Bordadora and Tarra Quismundo

'NY Times' blames hackers in latest website crash

The New York Times website was hacked Tuesday, the latest in a series of tall-profile attacks on media websites.
It is the second failure of the Times' site in two weeks. It went dark on Aug. 14 due to what the publication said then was an internal problem, not the result of hacking.

The Times said Tuesday the website first crashed at about 3 p.m. ET following an online attack on the company's domain name registrar, Melbourne IT. Marc Frons, chief information officer for The New York Times Co., issued a statement that the outage was "the result of a malicious external attack" and advised employees to "be careful when sending e-mail communications until this situation is resolved," according to a story that appeared on the newspaper's website.

Frons also said the attack was carried out by the Syrian Electronic Army "or someone trying very hard to be them." The SEA, a group of hackers who hold Syrian President Bashar Assad, have organized and carried out online attacks upon prominent websites in recent months. Matt Johansen, head of the Threat Research Center at WhiteHat Security, tweeted Tuesday that he was sent to an SEA domain when he tried to go to the Times' website. Twitter said Tuesday its website also was affected by a same attack, but it didn't refer to SEA. Later in the day, a Twitter account that seemingly belongs to SEA showed an image that indicates SEA also attacked Twitter's domain. The Times said its site was restored shortly after the initial smash, but the hackers speedily disrupted it again.

Trying to call up the website rendered varying experiences for readers in different places. For many, the site was completely down. Others reported that typing the website's Internet protocol address a numbered address loaded a stripped-down version of the site, with links to stories that didn't work. Some found that the IP address led to a version that was similar but not identical to the main site, again with links that didn't work. Gunter Ollmann, chief technology officer of Internet security firm IOActive, said the site was functional at his office in Atlanta. "The fact that I can look the site but you can't could mean" it could be a regionally limited attack, he said. Ollmann added that the regionally varying results could also stem from the Times restoring servers located in different locations. The Times turned to Twitter to tweet news updates. NYT AND TWITTER: Times uses Twitter to feed news updates Media websites are becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable as they integrate more software and content from partners, including third-party vendors, "widget" developers and advertising networks.

But corporate websites' Domain Name System (DNS), which assigns the site's domain names and indexes them upon designated servers, remains particularly vulnerable to hacker attacks, Ollmann said. "It's a very complex equation," he said, adding, "there are soft points." Twitter also said its trouble stemmed from its DNS provider, which "experienced an issue" that resulted in users having trouble viewing images and photos Tuesday. The attack upon the unnamed vendor resulted in the outage of a Twitter domain used for images, twimg.com. Twitter did not confirm that SEA was involved. "No Twitter user information was affected by this incident," it said. A day after the Times' Aug. 14 smash, the SEA also took down the websites of The Washington Post, CNNand Time. The companies said SEA hacked the Internet service of Outbrain, a content recommendation company whose software widget is embedded in their websites. Such attacks underscore the vulnerability of electronic links and communication that now underpin much of the information flow in the U.S. But targeting media sites brings more attention for hackers, Ollmann said. "If the website of GE or The New York Times went down, which is going to generate more attention?" The Wall Street Journal, a competitor of the Times, reacted speedily to the news of the outage. The newspaper, which requires subscribers to pay a monthly fee to access its articles, tweeted Tuesday that it is temporarily removing its pay wall for all readers. The Times allows readers to read several articles for free each month, but requires a subscription for full access to its site.

MTV VMA: Miley Cyrus nude performance criticised

Miley Cyrus caused controversy with fans at the MTV VMAs We all know Miley Cyrus loves a good twerk and a bit of a boogie on stage but her performance at the MTV VMAs didn't appear to go down too well with viewers upon Sunday night. The singer took to the stage to perform her song We Can't Stop and also sung a duet of Blurred Lines with Robin Thicke and went about in the eye-popping manner she appears to be becoming accustomed too. The star wore a nude-coloured bra and pants which were incredibly tight and left tiny to the imagination as she bent down ant twerked in front upon Robin Thicke's crotch on the stage.

And many viewers took to Twitter to express their disgust after watching the performance upon television.

One person wrote: "Miley Cyrus completely embarrassing herself at the #VMA awards. Jesus have some self respect, there's called being sexy, then just darn disgusting."

Another tweeter added: "I really want to go to sleep but I'm really anxious Miley Cyrus might be hiding in my closet."

And another person simply wrote: "Miley Cyrus that was disturbing."

However, Miley hasn't still spoken out about any controversy she may have caused but did take time to send her congratulations to One Direction who won the award for Best Song of the Summer for their track Best Song Ever.

Leaving before the band collected their prize, when they were booed, she tweeted: "Leaving the VMAs. No it's not over. I'm no psychic but congrats @onedirection #songofthesummer."

The Chemical Attack & Massacre of Damascus

Aug 21, 2013 - At approximately 3:00am this morning in Damascus, a year to the day after Obamas infamous red line speech warning Assad about using chemical weapons, and as a specialized UN inspection team nap in their hotels in Damascus, ostensibly there to investigate a CW attack 6 months ago, Assad launched his largest, most broad scale and most deadly attack using chemical weapons on the Damascus suburbs of Zamallaka and Ein Turma in the Eastern Ghouta place. The fallout from the attack was also felt in many of the surrounding districts.
Preliminary reports are that close to 600 people have been killed so far with thousands more injured from the effects of the gas which some are claiming, based on the symptoms seen, to be weaponized cyanide
In two days, you and the rest of the world will forget about this massacre the similar way you forgot about the rest that have happened over the last 2+ years in Syria.
We Syrians however, will never forget. Not the martyrs and not the way the rest of the world sat by and watched this happen to us.

police checking new information on death of Princess Diana

PrincessDiana.jpg
British police say they are examining newly received information relating to the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed, and that officers are assessing the information's "relevance and credibility." Scotland Yard declined to provide details about the information, only saying Saturday in a statement that the assessment will be carried out by officers from its specialist crime and operations unit. The force stressed that it was not reopening the investigation into the 1997 deaths of Diana and Fayed, who were killed in a car smash in Paris. Sky News reported that an unnamed source said the new information is believed to be that Diana and Fayed were killed by a member of the British military. The information was passed to police by the parents-in-law of a former soldier, the report said. "The information we're told was passed to Scotland Yard quite recently through the Royal Military Police. It also includes, we understand, references to something known as Diana's diary," Martin Brunt, Sky News crime correspondent said. In 2008, a British jury ruled that Diana, the Princess of Wales, and her companion, Fayed, were unlawfully killed due to reckless speed and drinking by their driver, and by the reckless pursuit of paparazzi chasing them.

Remy's son faces murder charge

The son of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy pleaded not guilty Friday to fatally stabbing his girlfriend a day after he was released from custody for allegedly assaulting her.

Jared Remy was arraigned in Waltham District Court on charges of murder and domestic assault and battery in the Thursday night killing of Jennifer Martel, 27.

Police officers responding to several 911 calls went to a Waltham apartment complex at about 10 p.m. Thursday and found Martel on an outside patio with multiple stab wounds, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said.

In court, prosecutors described a brutal and sure attack, saying Remy assaulted Martel in the kitchen, living room, on a stairway and then pinned her to the ground in the patio where he stabbed her several times. Neighbors who tried to help Martel were driven back when Remy slashed at them, Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern told a judge.

Remy was arrested at the scene, his clothes soaked in the victim's blood.

On Wednesday, Remy had been released on personal recognizance in an open assault and battery case in which Martel was the alleged victim, Ryan said. The there was no active restraining order against him, she said.

Remy has a violent criminal history, including a total of 15 criminal charges since 1998, according to Waltham court records. He has been accused of assaulting five people -- including four women -- and was involved in at least three restraining orders, including one in which he was the plaintiff.

Remy was ordered held without bail. His attorney, Peter Bella, said he was trying to figure out what happened leading up to Martel's stabbing, pointing out that his client had what could be described as defensive wounds. He called her death a tragedy.

Martel's 4-year-old child in the apartment was unhurt and is now in the custody of state child welfare officials. It was unclear if Remy was the daddy, Ryan said.

Jerry Remy is a former Red Sox second baseman who has been a color analyst on team broadcasts on the New England Sports Network since 1988. He has struggled with health problems in recent years.

Jared Remy is a former Red Sox security staffer who was fired by the team in 2008 during a steroid investigation.

The Red Sox did not immediately return a call for comment, but NESN released a two-sentence statement lamenting the tragedy.

"All of us at NESN and the Red Sox, along with Jerry Remy, are filled with grief for everyone involved, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Jennifer Martel," the statement read.

NESN said later in a separate statement that Dennis Eckersley will occupy in for Jerry Remy for games through next weekend. Network spokesman Gary Roy did not reply to calls and an email for clarification.

Area 51 officially acknowledged, mapped in newly released documents

(CNN) -- Area 51 has long been a subject of fascination for conspiracy theorists and paranormal enthusiasts, but newly released CIA documents officially acknowledge the site and suggest that the place served a far less remarkable purpose than many had supposed.
According to these reports, which include a map of the base's location in Nevada, Area 51 was merely a testing site for the government's U-2 and OXCART aerial surveillance programs. The U-2 program conducted surveillance around the world, including over the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Area 51, about 125 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is synonymous in popular culture with government secrecy, and many have theorized that it holds the reply to one of the greatest questions plaguing mankind: Are we really alone in the universe?

But the newly released documents make no mention of alien autopsy rooms or spaceship parking lots.

UFO spotted hovering over pool FBI memo details flying saucers, aliens UFO welcome center waits for green guys
This information will be disappointing to some, who have arrive to view the place has been a mecca of sorts for alien encounters.
For these true believers, the existence of alien spacecraft at Area 51, and the government's attempts to lid up their trace, is irrefutable and has been since reports of Unidentified Flying Objects -- or UFOs -- began to emerge from the Nevada desert in the center part of the 20th century.
The map and other documents were released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request submitted by Jeffrey T. Richelson, a senior fellow at the National Security Archives, in 2005.
Richelson submitted the request as part of his continuing study of aerial surveillance programs and told CNN that he was not given an explanation of why the new documents were less redacted than previous versions declassified by the agency.
He points out, however, that the location of Area 51 was not a particularly well-kept secret. Its location appears in books upon aerial surveillance and is widely referenced in popular culture.

In fact, the map that was released in the CIA documents mirrors the one that appears after a easy Google Maps search for "Area 51."
Area 51 has also been referenced in government documents in the past, though this newest release is the first that acknowledges its existence and location in a purposeful way.
Richelson told CNN he believes this could signal a dramatic change in the government's willingness to declassify information about the famed base, meaning even more information could come out about Area 51 in the future.
The release of these reports seem to put the theories about aliens and flying saucers to rest for the time being, although they may not be enough to silence the true believers.
At least they still have Roswell, right?

Egypt declares national emergency

Egypt has declared a month-long state of emergency after scores of people were killed when security forces stormed two protest camps in Cairo.

Thousands of supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood had staged the sit-ins.

Police have arrested key Brotherhood members and taken control of the camps. The government says 149 people were killed in the operation.

The US condemned the emergency law and appealed for calm.

The Muslim Brotherhood says more than 2,000 people died in Wednesday's violence.

The state of emergency is scheduled to last for a month, and imposes a curfew in Cairo and several other provinces between 19:00 local time (17:00 GMT) and 06:00.

The measure was taken because the "security and order of the nation face danger due to deliberate sabotage, and attacks on public and private buildings and the loss of life by extremist groups," the presidency said in a statement.

Vice-President Mohammed ElBaradei has announced his resignation from the interim government in the wake of the violence.

"I cannot continue in shouldering the responsibility for decisions I do not agree with and I fear their consequences. I cannot shoulder the responsibility for a single fall of blood," he said in a statement.

Bloodshed

Armoured bulldozers moved into the two protest camps shortly after dawn on Wednesday morning.

Large plumes of smoke rose over parts of the city as the operation began. Security forces fired tear gas canisters as helicopters circled above.

The smaller camp in Nahda Square was cleared relatively quickly, but clashes raged for most of the day around the main camp close Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque.

Egyptian television said that by evening the security forces had finally seized full control of the site, and were allowing surviving protesters to depart.

But several Muslim Brotherhood leaders were reportedly detained, including Essam El-Erian and Mohamed El-Beltagy, whose 17-year-old daughter was apparently killed.

Most of the dead are thought to be Morsi supporters, but members of the security forces were also killed.

A cameraman working for Sky News, Mick Deane, was also killed, as was a reporter for Gulf News, Habiba Ahmed Abd Elaziz. She was not working at the time

There are also reports of unrest elsewhere in Egypt.

About 35 people have died in clashes in the province of Fayoum, south of Cairo, Reuters news agency says.
At least five people have been killed in the province of Suez, according to the health ministry.
Clashes have also been reported in the northern provinces of Alexandria and Beheira, and the central provinces of Assiut and Menya.
State news agency Mena says three churches have been attacked, one in the city of Sohag which has a large number of Coptic Christian residents.

Hannah Anderson rescued, James Lee

Mary Rook of the Salt Lake City FBI speaks during a press conference at the Cascade Fire Station in Cascade, Idaho, Saturday. The man suspected of kidnapping 16-year-old Hannah Anderson was shot dead in Idaho as the girl was rescued.

The abduction of California teenager Hannah Anderson by a 40-year-old family pal came to a violent end Saturday evening when James Lee DiMaggio was shot and killed by an FBI tactical team in the Idaho wilderness following three days of searching marked by Amber Alerts in five western states.

Law enforcement authorities report that 16-year-old Ms. Anderson was rescued  apparently unhurt, but taken to an place hospital for review.

Although the main point of the search and rescue mission has been completed, many important questions remain to be answered.

RECOMMENDED: Crime falls in the US. Are you safer today?

Was Mr. DiMaggio directly responsible for the blaze at his house that killed Hannahs mom Christina Anderson and her younger brother Ethan?

Did DiMaggio resist arrest or put up a fight? Based on what had been found at his house, authorities had warned that his car  found covered in brush at a trailhead  might be rigged with explosives. But nothing so far has been reported about any firearms or other weapons he might have had when what authorities say was a confrontation occurred.

Did Hannah, with whom DiMaggio had become infatuated, leave the San Diego place voluntarily with the man said to be like an uncle to the Anderson siblings? Did she know her mother and brother had been killed?

She had indicated no distress to the horseback rider who saw the two with camping gear in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area  a rugged, heavily-forested area about 70 miles northeast of Boise  a few days earlier, chatting briefly with them.

But in other cases involving girls abducted by men  the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart in Salt Lake City in 2003 and held for nine months  they had opportunities to say police officers of their situation but didnt do so because the kidnapper had threatened their family.

In Hannah Andersons case, freely joining DiMaggio seems unlikely for another reason: When DiMaggio suggested to Hannah that they might date if they were the same age, Hannah told buddy Marissa Chavez, 15, that she never wanted to be alone with him.

"She was a tiny creeped out by it," Marissa told the Associated Press.

Amber Alerts, broadcast on television, flashing roadside signs, and as automatic text messages sent with a piercing noise to smart phones, apparently played a huge role in the rescue effort.

DiMaggios blue Nissan Versa automobile was seen traveling north through rural California and then Oregon into Idaho. The horseback rider, who met Hannah and DiMaggio on the wilderness trail, recognized them from TV news reports when he got house and called the Amber Alert tip line.

Hundreds of local, state, and federal police agents, aided by law enforcement aircraft, swarmed to the area, finding the pair camped at Morehead Lake not far from where they had met the man on horseback.

"Obviously we would've liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in the court of law but that's not going to be the case," San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said at a press conference Saturday evening.

Hannah is expected to be reunited with her dad Brett Anderson upon Sunday.

"Now that Hannah is safe and being evaluated in a medical facility, FBI victim specialists are working with Hannah and her family to profit them the resources they need as they enter this next challenging phase of this incident," said Mary Rook, spokeswoman for the FBI's office in Salt Lake City.

Officials say it will take some time before exactly what happened in the Idaho wilderness is known.

As a matter of policy, the FBI automatically dispatches a shooting evaluation team from Washington to evaluation the circumstances surrounding any situation where an FBI agent discharges a firearm, said Ms. Rook.

The team will interview witnesses and determine exactly what happened. For this reason, no other details can be released at this time, she said. When incidents like these occur, no one ever really knows where the investigation will guide. In this case, our team faced a very challenging situation.
